Chess
Big, young and successful
With around 75 members, the USG Chemnitz is one of the largest chess clubs in Saxony. 60% are children and young people, and other children are looked after. Four adult and five junior teams compete. The spectrum ranges from teams that compete at state or district level to popular chess. Training evenings take place every Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (children/except during the holidays) and 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (adults) in the TU cafeteria (Str. d. Nationen). The city championship is traditionally organized by the USG. This individual tournament is held over nine rounds from October to May, also on Thursdays, and is open to everyone. Our first Chemnitz grandmaster, Mathias Womacka, an honorary member of our club, now plays for the Bundesliga team SV 1920 Hofheim due to his job. Our long-time section leader Günter Sobeck tragically passed away at the end of January 2023 - our sports friends are still in a phase of discovery.
Last season we had an unprecedented series of successes in the men's division: all three teams were promoted! Our first men's team took second place in the Saxony league and was promoted to the premier league for the first time since 2015. The second team dominated the second state league with 18:0 points and was promoted to the first state league. The third team regained the lead in the first district league on the last match day and was promoted to the district league. At the Saxony team championships, our U16 girls became Saxon runners-up, while the 20-year-old team and the U14 team returned from Sebnitz with bronze. Clara Mehner (U14w) became Saxony champion and Rafif Sayouf (U16w) became Saxony runners-up.
We are looking for young players:
We expect children aged 6 - 12 who like to puzzle and play chess to come to our open training on Thursdays. Please register in advance ( tom.seifert@usg-chemnitz.de ).
